Conard Holton

There are two things that I love about being a painter. Most rewarding: To see, feel, and express a deep sense of contact between human consciousness and the natural world. And a bonus: it’s very satisfying to study the craft and history of painting – the materials, styles, and techniques of painters past and present. What was/is their vision and how could it enrich my own?

I practice both studio and plein air painting, with one informing the other and both suiting my sensibilities and background. I grew up in the pre-sprawl, verdant farm country of southeastern Pennsylvania and spent many hours in the fields, woods, and barns. The contours of the land and the light where I live now – in the Hudson Valley and the Adirondacks – are very different. But in the 30 years that I’ve lived here I’ve always felt at home.
