Betty O’Brien

After many years as a teaching artist in a number of venues, the focus is on my own work in my large studio in the Shirt Factory complex in Glens Falls NY. The space is often used by several regional arts organizations for meetings, demos and workshops since it is set up as a fully functioning teaching facility. My passion is watermedia and I have used all its forms; including watercolor, acrylic, gouache, inks, and compatible pastels, pencils, and crayons. I often mix mediums, and change the process to suit the concept or feeling I wish to convey in a particular series.

Overall my work is about making opposites connect to create a poetic effect. I look for contrasts, both those inherent in the subject and those formal ones that occur in the process of composing a work. Although I carefully plan a composition I want media manipulation and expressive marks to push reality beyond the merely descriptive.
